Outreach with Children
Coastal Carolina Clay Guild member, Leslie Willett, spent 2 afternoons during the summer teaching clay sculpture to groups of children at a local child care center. The 1st group of children, 4-year-olds, had been studying turtles. Leslie brought photos of turtles to share and discuss with the children. Each child made a clay turtle. The next time, Leslie worked with 5 to 10-year-olds who had just finished studying a unit on the circus. After a lively discussion of the animals in a circus, the children made a clay circus animal of their choice. The pieces were fired at the Pancoe Clay Center at the Cameron Art Museum by Hiroshi Sueyoshi. Leslie returned the bisque-fired animals to the child care center where the children painted them with watercolors.
